The Far North region is commonly referred to as the Flinders Ranges and Outback which comprises of around 80% of the state’s land area.

The overall region supports a population of 30,000, with the largest community being Port Augusta, which acts as a vital service centre for the region’s widespread and diverse, small and micro-communities.

The region incorporates two of Australia’s tourism icons the Flinders Ranges and the Outback, all of South Australia’s priority mineral exploration regions, and the crossroads of Australia’s national land transport network.

Significant opportunities for economic growth in the northern region exist in the sectors of tourism, small business, renewable and emerging industries, transport, resources, food and arts.

Key visitor experiences include; mining for opal, underground living, stargazing on an astronomy tour, first signs of life on a fossil tour, local authentic aboriginal artefacts and guided tours, bush tucker produce, 4WDing, scenic flights, and a diverse offering of National Parks.
