Iconic Long Distance Trails

The Mawson and Heyson trails are famous long-distance trails recognised across the world for their natural beauty and challenging landscapes that offer sensational rewards.

Heyson Trail

The Heyson Trail starts in Parachilna, hometown to the iconic Prairie Hotel, surrounded by the breathtaking ancient landscapes of Ikara Wilpena National Park. Cycle or hike through tranquil bushland, rugged ranges, historic towns, stations and majestic cliffs overlooking the Spencer Gulf. Choose a segment of the trail or follow the continuous line south down to Cape Jervis.

Mawson Trail

The Mawson Trail offers cyclists a spectacularly diverse range of scenery. Starting in the historical outback mining town of Blinman, the Mawson Trail winds through Ikara Flinders-Ranges National Park, the quaint country towns of the Southern Flinders Ranges, the rolling green hills of Clare Valley wine country and into Adelaide.

National Park Trails

Mount Remarkable National Park

Stay in Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges and the leading cycling hub of the region. The gateway to Mount Remarkable National Park is just minutes from the main street, where dozens of trails are available to the public. Beginners, intermediate and advanced trails will satisfy even the most adventurous riders.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park

Wilpena Pound is considered the jewel in the crown of Ikara-Flinders Ranges, offering a wide number of trails for every level of rider, each one offering an astonishing view of the ancient ranges. Bike hire is available from Wilpena Pound Resort, where you can also find both guided and self-guided tours of the many varied trails in the area.

Aussie Travel Code Tip: Visitors are kindly asked to no longer hike beyond Tanderra Saddle to Ngarri Mudlanha (the top of St Mary's Peak), which is a culturally significant site to the First Nations Adnyamathanha people. This part of the trail is also extremely challenging, and been a fatally dangerous climb for several travellers. It is best enjoyed from other trails and air tours. 

Innamincka Regional Reserve

Further into the Outback, Innamincka Regional Reserve is a surprisingly lush oasis on the banks of the Cooper Creek. Enjoy the peaceful trails along tranquil waterways and explore the historical sights where Burke and Wills pursued their ill-fated expedition.

With over 180km of bike trails for you to enjoy, Bendleby Ranges is an amazing station stay for both families and experienced adventure-seekers. Their Training Track is a terrific option for younger families.
